March of the Fighting People parading past the USA
Made in response to the 2020 protests in the United States, March cuts into the political language of a Cuban tourist catalogue found on a Berlin pavement. A publication designed to invite Western visitors into Cuba becomes material for addressing unrest in the country across the water.
By extracting and rearranging its words, the work draws out the propaganda within the tourist invitation and gives its revolutionary language another political use. Set against the catalogue’s alluring image of place, the collage explores how the same words can serve official power, express solidarity and imagine collective change.
