Machines Writing About Machine Writing
I recently released a project called Large Labor Model that estimates AI’s technical reach across human labor. Among its predictions: creative professions are among the most exposed. Not eventually. Now.
Like many of my friends in the creative industries, I have been skeptical. My experience with these tools is that they produce interesting work in the hands of creative people and mediocrity with less skilled operators. Truly original thinking seems to elude even the most advanced models trained on the entirety of human knowledge.
But skill amplification has been the primary condition under which the machines have been asked to perform. They have been assistants, autocompletes, interns, rubber ducks. Seldom have they been given the brief a writer gives herself:
Make something worth reading.
